Musical Theatre

Who doesn’t love a song and dance?

You ARE an artist by your

sheer desire and passion
to be one…no training program, acting
school
, or professional credit
bestows the title
of ‘artist’ upon you…
it’s a self-declaration.

– Telly Leung

You gain strength, courage,

and confidence by
every experience
in which you really stop to
look fear in the face.
You must do the thing
which you think you cannot do.

– Eleanor Roosevelt

To dare is to lose one’s footing

momentarily.
To not dare is to
lose oneself.

– Soren Kierkegaard

Twenty years from now

you will be more disappointed
by the things you didn’t do
than by the ones you did do.
So throw off the bowlines.
Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds
in your sails.
Explore. Dream. Discover.

– Mark Twain

I dearly miss my high school show choir, and I never thought I’d be able to do anything like it again, until I discovered…[drumroll, please: dat da-da dum]…musical theatre! I had always thought that the only people who did this kind of thing were professionals who had been doing it all their lives; I didn’t realize there was a middle ground where people do it without making it their career. That said, I’ve now come across many working actors and subjected them to curiosity-driven interrogation of how their world turns. They are brave, brave people. And perhaps I should have expected this to be true, but the most successful people were also the most humble and grounded.

The more I learned about musical theatre, the more I felt like I missed out on it as a kid, when talent was less crucial than it is for adults (darn!). During this year off from Penn, I’ve invested a lot of time and energy in trying to make up for what I missed with musical theatre classes at the Walnut Street Theatre and private voice lessons. I began searching and organizing local auditions for my own use, whence came the auditions database, the original purpose of this section. I have now expanded it to serve as a place for anything else related, such as videos. I hope these are useful and entertaining, respectively =)

I still don’t consider myself a real theatre person, but I believe this statement from Telly Leung:

“You ARE an artist by your sheer desire and passion to be one…no training program, acting school, or professional credit bestows the title of ‘artist’ upon you…it’s a self-declaration.”
